The process of toolmaking typically begins with the design phase, where toolmakers analyze the desired component or product specifications. The next step involves material selection, where toolmakers choose the most suitable materials, such as steel, carbide or aluminium, based on factors like hardness, wear resistance, and thermal conductivity.

Toolmakers then employ various machining techniques, including milling, turning, grinding, and EDM (electrical discharge machining), to shape the tool components. Precision and attention to detail are paramount, as even the smallest deviations can impact the final product's quality. The assembled tool undergoes rigorous testing and fine-tuning, ensuring it performs optimally and meets the desired specifications.

Industrial patternmaking is a process that involves the creation of patterns used in casting and molding operations. Patterns serve as the master templates from which moulds and casts are made. Skilled patternmakers meticulously craft these patterns to ensure the reproduction of intricate details, accurate dimensions, and proper parting lines required for successful casting or moulding.

Patternmaking can be done by hand and/or CNC machine.
